The Naranjos descend from potters like Margie Naranjo (1917–2006) and connect to matriarchs like Margaret Tafoya. Over 200 active Santa Clara potters today continue innovating on these traditions.
Santa Clara Pueblo, located in northern New Mexico, has a renowned tradition of pottery making that dates back centuries. The pueblo's artists are celebrated for their blackware and redware pieces, often featuring deep-carved or sgraffito (scratched) designs inspired by nature, animals, and Pueblo symbolism. Bison motifs are particularly popular, symbolizing strength, abundance, and cultural stories from the Plains influences in Southwestern Native art. The Naranjo family is one of the most prominent lineages in Santa Clara pottery, with multiple generations producing award-winning works, including intricate bison etchings.
