Gregory Lonewolf was a Santa Clara Pueblo potter known for his exquisite sgraffito pottery, a technique involving intricate designs scratched or etched into the surface of the clay. Born into a family with a rich pottery tradition, he was the son of Joseph Lonewolf, a renowned potter, and the grandson of Camilio Sunflower Tafoya and Agapita Silva Tafoya, both respected Santa Clara artists. His mother, Rosemary Apple Blossom Lonewolf, and aunt, Grace Medicine Flower, were also accomplished potters. Gregory learned the art of pottery from his parents, mastering the sgraffito technique that his father pioneered, which involves carving detailed designs into the polished surface of blackware or redware pottery.
Santa Clara Pueblo, located in New Mexico, is famous for its hand-crafted blackware and redware pottery, often featuring deep carvings and motifs like the bear paw, water serpent (avanyu), or eagle feather designs. Gregory’s work stood out for its precision and artistry, often described as some of the finest sgraffito pottery produced at Santa Clara. His pieces, such as the "Firing Day" sgraffito seed pot, showcase his ability to create delicate, cameo-like designs, continuing the legacy of innovation in his family and the pueblo. Tragically, Gregory passed away recently before April 2024.
