Linda Jo'Povi Askan, often known simply as Linda Askan, is a renowned Native American potter from Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico, with additional heritage from the Diné (Navajo Nation).  Her Tewa name, Jo'Povi, translates to "Cactus Flower," given to her by her grandmother, Adelaide Silva Sisneros.  Born in 1954, she is a member of the Summer Clan and was raised in the traditional manner on the pueblo, straddling the Rio Grande about 25 miles north of Santa Fe.
Askan graduated from Española High School and later attended the Institute of American Indian Arts.  Before dedicating herself fully to pottery in the 1980s, she worked as a Respiratory Therapy Technician in local hospitals.  She began creating pottery in 1984, learning the craft from her mother, Marie Sisneros Askan, and her grandmother, both accomplished potters who emphasized traditional techniques.  Her family has deep roots in the art:  her sister, Birdell Bourdon, is also a potter, and she is related to other Santa Clara potters like John, Joyce, Linda, and Merton Sisneros, as well as Earlene Tafoya.  Askan has passed on her knowledge to her two daughters, Diana (born 1976) and Rose (born 1978), both of whom have learned the traditional methods despite pursuing higher education.
Askan specializes in traditional Santa Clara Pueblo pottery, renowned for its black-on-black and redware styles pioneered by artists like Maria Martinez.  She hand-coils her pieces from local clay, polishes them by hand, and fires them outdoors using traditional methods—the final color depends on the clay slip applied and the firing process (reducing oxygen for blackware or oxidizing for redware).  Her work often features intricate carving, such as bear paws, geometric designs, or melon ribs (raised ridges mimicking watermelon skin).
