Jody Naranjo is a celebrated contemporary Tewa potter from Santa Clara Pueblo (New Mexico), known for blending traditional Pueblo pottery techniques with innovative, humorous, and highly detailed sgraffito (etched) designs. Born May 24, 1969, she is the daughter of potter Dolly Naranjo and granddaughter of Rose “Gia” Naranjo (1917–2004), matriarch of a major artistic dynasty that includes sculptors Michael Naranjo and Nora Naranjo-Morse, potters Jody Folwell (her aunt) and Edna Romero, and others such as scholars Tessie Naranjo and Rina Swentzell. She is also related to artists including Roxanne Swentzell and Susan Folwell. She began working with clay as a child, learning traditional methods (digging and processing native clays, hand-coiling, stone polishing, and outdoor pit-firing) from her mother and female relatives. She still uses polishing stones passed down in the family. By age 15 she was selling under the portal at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe; she later attended the Institute of American Indian Arts. She is a mother of three daughters and is represented by Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe.
