Joe Chavarria is a native of Santa Clara Pueblo who began making pottery in 1979. He is largely self-taught, drawing inspiration from observing potters across various pueblos. Before dedicating himself to ceramics, he worked on economic development projects for Native American reservations, including the design of the American Indian Development Bank. His transition to pottery reflects a deep connection to his cultural roots, as he describes his process as striving "to become one with the Spirit of the clay."
Chavarria works in both traditional and contemporary styles, using the pueblo's signature black-on-black ware (achieved through reduction firing in a low-oxygen environment) and redware (oxidized firing). He employs stone-polishing for a glossy finish and carves or impresses designs into the clay before firing. His pieces often feature deep engravings or sgraffito (scratching through layers to reveal contrasting clay beneath).
