From a Private Colorado Collection

In Very Good Condition

Joe Chavarria is a respected potter from Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico, known for his finely carved traditional blackware and redware pottery. His work features deep, precise carvings with classic Pueblo motifs, especially the avanyu (water serpent or plumed serpent), along with feathers, geometric patterns, and other native designs.

Chavarria, a native of Santa Clara Pueblo, began making pottery around 1979. He is largely self-taught but drew strong inspiration from his mother, Vickie Martinez Tafoya (also known as Vicky Martinez), who learned from her grandmother Flora Naranjo and studied with noted potters like Stella Chavarria and Teresita Naranjo. He has also observed techniques across various pueblos.
