Margaret and Luther Gutierrez, a sister and brother from Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, were renowned for their polychrome pottery, a style they learned from their parents, Lela and Van Gutierrez. Their wedding jars, characterized by vibrant, natural pigments in colors like tan, red, green, blue, gold, black, and white, are distinctive for their intricate designs and bold color palettes, unique among Santa Clara potters. These pieces often feature symbolic motifs such as the Avanyu (water serpent), yei figures, or geometric patterns, with some jars showcasing whimsical animal or hunter-like figures.
