Hand Coiled Black on Black Large Pot with Glossy and Matte Finish in a Geometric Design
In Very Good Condition
Rafaelita Aguilar (born 1936 or 1937 in Kewa/Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico) is a respected Native American potter known for her large-scale, traditionally hand-coiled black-on- black pottery. She began creating pottery around 1953, learning the craft from her mother, Miguelita Aguilar.
Rafaelita specializes in large ollas (storage jars), bowls, and dough bowls. She hand-coils the clay (sourced locally from the Pueblo), shapes it without a wheel, polishes it with stones, applies slip for the black finish, and pit-fires the pieces.
She frequently collaborates with her daughter Darlene Aguilar on large black-on-black and red pieces, signing works as "Rafaelita & Darlene Aguilar" or simply "Rafaelita Aguilar".
