Santo Domingo Pueblo (now officially Kewa Pueblo), in New Mexico, is renowned for its traditional hand-coiled pottery. Kewa potters use local buff-colored clay, often with a cream slip, and decorate with bold black (from plants like Rocky Mountain bee plant) and red (from clay slips) geometric designs, birds, flowers, leaves, or other motifs. Human figures or sacred symbols are typically avoided on commercial pieces. Pottery is traditionally hand-coiled (no wheel), polished, painted with yucca brushes, and open-fired outdoors with materials like cottonwood bark. Large forms like ollas (storage jars), dough bowls, and water jars are common due to the elastic clay.
