Santo Domingo Pueblo, now officially known as Kewa Pueblo (located between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico, along the Rio Grande), has long been one of the most renowned pueblos for traditional polychrome pottery. Among its most iconic forms is the Wedding Jar (sometimes called a “marriage vase” or “nuptial jar”).
A traditional Wedding Jar is a double-spouted vessel joined by a handle, symbolizing the union of two people. During a traditional Pueblo wedding ceremony (or at certain feasts), the jar traditionally holds water or another liquid. The bride and groom drink simultaneously from the two spouts, representing two lives becoming one while still retaining individuality. After the ceremony, the jar is kept by the couple as a cherished heirloom.
