Mary Small (1940–2024) was a celebrated artist from Jemez Pueblo, known for her creative traditional Jemez pottery. Her Towa name was “Kal-la-Tee,” meaning “New Indian Basket.” She incorporated distinctive elements like gray slip (a clay coating) in her designs, along with terracotta bases, bold geometric patterns, and motifs in black, white, orange/red, and gray. She produced a variety of works, including pots, vases, storyteller figures, nativity sets, figurines, and smaller items like ceramic ornaments or charms.
Taos Pueblo ceramic ornaments are beautiful, often handmade or printed pieces that celebrate the iconic Taos Pueblo in New Mexico—a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ancient multi-storied adobe structures, one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America.
