Sioux (Lakota/Dakota/Nakota) hide saddle bags are traditional Native American horse gear from the Great Plains, primarily made in the 19th century (often 1870s–1890s or early 1900s). They served both practical and decorative purposes for transporting goods while riding or during camp moves.

These items were purchased from Fred Harvey outpost by my grandparents during a family excursion, Feb. 21 through March, 1910, to Arizona (ending in California). My grandparents accompanied a party of more than a dozen other adults (friends), some with children (about a half dozen). My father was one, age 6. It was through him that these items came to me shortly after my husband and I moved to the West coast in the 70’s, where they have been in a storage trunk since then.
