Grants Pass is in southwestern Oregon, in the Rogue River Valley, traditional territory of the Takelma (also called Takilma or Upper Umpqua in some contexts) and related Athabaskan-speaking peoples. Archaeological evidence from the region, including sites in Jackson County (where Grants Pass is located), shows grinding tools like pestles, mortars, manos, and metates were common. Numerous pestles and grinding implements, likely used for acorn processing as a key subsistence activity.
