The Washoe (or Wašiw), an indigenous people of the Great Basin region in the western United States (primarily around Lake Tahoe in Nevada and California), are renowned for their intricate basketry traditions. Basket weaving was essential to Washoe culture for practical purposes like gathering, storage, cooking, and carrying loads, but it also evolved into a highly artistic form, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among these, miniature burden baskets (often called "mini mokeewits" or simply miniatures) represent a fascinating blend of utility and artistry, scaled down to pocket-sized or doll-like proportions.
