The Whilkut (also spelled Hwilget or Whilcut) are a Native American tribe historically part of the Hupa subgroup within the Athabaskan language family. They traditionally inhabited the lower Trinity River region in northwestern California, near the modern-day town of Hoopa, California. Closely related to the Hupa, Karuk, and Yurok peoples, the Whilkut shared cultural practices, including renowned basketry traditions that emphasized utility, durability, and intricate designs. Basketry, particularly hat-making, was a vital skill primarily practiced by women and played a central role in daily life, ceremonies, and economic exchange.
