Yup'ik (or Yupik) peoples, part of the broader Eskimo-Inuit cultural group, traditionally inhabit coastal regions of western and southwestern Alaska, including areas overlapping with the Northwest Arctic (such as the Bering Strait region and St. Lawrence Island Yupik communities). While the far northern Arctic is more associated with Iñupiaq (Inupiat) baleen basketry, Yup'ik basketry is renowned for its finely coiled grass baskets, often made from beach rye grass (or wild rye grass) harvested in summer, cured, and woven during winter.
