Hand Carved from Antler of 7 Corn Maidens and Jet Inlaid Facial Details
From a Private Colorado Collection
In Very Good Condition
A Zuni Pueblo Antler 7 Maidens fetish (often featuring Corn Maidens) is a hand-carved spiritual object symbolizing life, fertility, and feminine nurturing. When two maidens are depicted together, they often represent sisters demonstrating mutual love and support as they foster abundance and happiness for their community.
Carved from elk or deer antler, a material valued for its prehistoric Zuni tradition and its ability to hold intricate detail. The bodies are frequently incised with a criss-cross pattern representing corn kernels, signifying their status as "Corn Maidens" who brought the gift of corn to the Zuni people. Artisans often use turquoise, red coral, lapis lazuli, and jet inlays for eyes, mouths, and necklaces. Some figures feature Hopi-style hair whorls, signifying youth and that they have not yet had children.
