Calvert Bowannie is a renowned Zuni Pueblo fetish carver known for his distinctive black-and-white animal carvings, particularly penguins, ravens, skunks, whales/orcas, and magpies. He specializes in using black marble (or black onyx/Belgian marble) for the body, inlaid with white mother-of-pearl (or clam shell) for the belly and accents to mimic the penguin's tuxedo-like coloration, often adding turquoise inlays for eyes. These pieces are hand-carved, polished, and signed by the artist.
His penguin fetishes are among his most popular works, described as adorable, whimsical, and simplified in form. They typically measure around 1-2 inches in height and are sold through galleries and online Native American art dealers.
Zuni fetishes are small stone carvings traditionally believed to hold spiritual power, though modern ones sold commercially are artistic representations rather than ceremonially blessed items.
