Dee Edaakie is a contemporary Zuni (A:shiwi) fetish carver known for his expressive, often whimsical, and innovative animal carvings. He belongs to a prominent Zuni artistic family.
Dee carves from a variety of stones — including semi-precious materials, “found” stones, boulder opal, pyrite, hematite, and others. His subjects include bears, mountain lions, badgers, eagles, and other animals. His style blends abstraction with recognizable animal forms, often emphasizing the natural spirit and shape within the stone. He is influenced by his uncle, the renowned carver Gibbs Othole.

He works from his home studio on the Zuni Pueblo and is admired for his care, enthusiasm, and ability to carve challenging hard stones. Collectors appreciate his fresh approach that appeals across generations while honoring Zuni traditions.

Dee is part of the extended Edaakie family, which includes notable jewelers and carvers. His work is featured in galleries specializing in Native American art, and he continues to create pieces that celebrate Zuni culture and the natural world.
