Lance Deysee is a Zuni fetish carver known for detailed works in materials like marble (e.g., an etched skunk with turquoise inlays) and mother of pearl. One documented piece by him is a Cocker Spaniel fetish carved from mother of pearl, measuring approximately 7/8" high x 1/4" wide x 1 1/2" long. This contemporary carving reflects the Zuni tradition of using shell materials and creating realistic animal forms.
Zuni Pueblo fetishes are small stone carvings, primarily from the Zuni people in New Mexico, representing animals believed to embody spiritual powers and act as protectors or healers. While traditional fetishes focus on native animals like mountain lions, bears, or wolves (associated with the six directions), contemporary Zuni carvers often create figures of domestic animals, including dogs like the Cocker Spaniel, blending tradition with modern appeal for collectors.
