Celester Laate (sometimes Laete) was a Zuni fetish carver known for detailed work in materials like shell (including abalone and mother-of-pearl). His pieces are collected as authentic Native American art, and vintage examples are sought after, especially as he has passed away. He carved various animals, including mountain lions, bears, and birds/owls. Owls often symbolize wisdom, protection, or guardianship in Zuni tradition (sometimes described as a protector of the home or night spirits).
