Zuni Pueblo hand-carved and painted wooden snake fetishes associated with M. (Michael) Chavez are small traditional Native American carvings from Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico. Chavez is a recognized Zuni family name among fetish carvers (others include David Chavez, Kenny Chavez, and Ephran Chavez, who typically work in stone such as serpentine, onyx, or marble). Wood-painted examples like those linked to Michael Chavez are less common than stone ones but fit the broader tradition of Zuni animal carvings sold to collectors.
