Apache
The Apache tribes of New Mexico and Arizona are Southern Athabaskan‑speaking peoples whose ancestors migrated into the Southwest between roughly 1000–1500 CE. They developed distinct regional identities, but share linguistic roots, mobile lifeways, and long histories of resistance to Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. expansion.
Apache Tribes in New Mexico
-
Jicarilla Apache Nation (Northern NM) Centered in Dulce, New Mexico, the Jicarilla traditionally lived in the mountain and plateau regions of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. They combined hunting, gathering, and limited farming, and were known for their diplomatic skill and trade networks. Today they maintain a strong cultural identity and operate their own government and enterprises.
-
Mescalero Apache Tribe (Southern NM) Based in Mescalero, New Mexico, the Mescalero historically ranged across the Sacramento Mountains and parts of southern NM and west Texas. They are closely related to the Chiricahua and Lipan Apache. The Mescalero Reservation is home to members of all three groups today, preserving traditions including ceremonies, language revitalization, and crafts.
Apache Tribes in Arizona
-
Western Apache (multiple bands) The Western Apache live primarily in east‑central Arizona, organized into several federally recognized tribes:
-
White Mountain Apache Tribe (Fort Apache Reservation)
-
San Carlos Apache Tribe
-
Tonto Apache Tribe
-
Yavapai‑Apache Nation (mixed Yavapai and Apache ancestry) These groups historically occupied mountain and canyon regions, practicing hunting, gathering, and limited agriculture. They are known for basketry, weapon‑making, and ceremonial traditions. Many Western Apache still speak their language, and tribal schools teach traditional crafts and regalia‑making.

-
Chiricahua Apache (historically in AZ/NM) Although today most Chiricahua descendants live within the Mescalero Reservation in NM, historically they lived across southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. They were renowned strategists and resisted U.S. military campaigns in the 19th century.
