San Ildefonso black-on-black pottery jars by Maria Martinez (Maria Poveka Montoya Martinez, c. 1887–1980) are iconic works of 20th-century Native American art from the Tewa people of San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico.  metmuseum.orgMaria, often collaborating with her  husband Julián Martinez (1885–1943) and later family members, is one of the most famous Pueblo potters. She and Julián pioneered and popularized the distinctive black-on-black style around 1918–1920 (perfected by the early 1920s), elevating traditional Pueblo pottery to fine art status and gaining international recognition. Their work appears in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
