San Ildefonso Pueblo black-on-black pottery signed “Marie + Santana” was made by Maria Martinez (also known as Marie/Poveka, 1887–1980) and her daughter-in-law Santana Martinez (1909–2002) of San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico. adobegallery.com Maria formed and shaped the vessels using traditional coil-building techniques with local clay. Santana painted the designs. Maria’s son Adam (Santana’s husband) typically handled clay preparation and firing, while Maria’s sister Clara often assisted with the high-gloss polishing.
