Maria Martinez (1887–1980), born Maria Poveka Montoya at San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico, is widely regarded as one of the most influential Native American potters in history.  She revolutionized Pueblo pottery, particularly through her development of the iconic black-on-black style, which features highly polished black surfaces with matte black designs.  This technique not only preserved ancient Tewa traditions but also revitalized the economy of the San Ildefonso Pueblo, a small community of about 20 miles northwest of Santa Fe.
